A key skill to learn on the road to recovery is how to manage your emotional brain. Unless you learn to manage the emotional brain people remain trapped. In this The Body Keeps the Score Summary there are 6 tactics:

Staying Calm
Learning how to breathe calmly and remaining in a state of relative physical relaxation, even while accessing painful, is an essential tool for recovery.

In research it is shown that ten weeks of yoga practice markedly reduced the PTSD symptoms of patients who had failed to respond to any medication or to any other treatment.

Mindfulness
At the core of recovery is self-awareness. The most important phrases in trauma therapy are “Notice that” and “What happens next?”

Practising mindfulness calms down the sympathetic nervous system so that you are less likely to be thrown into fight-or-flight.

Relationships
Study after study shows that having a good support network constitutes the single most powerful protection against becoming traumatized.

After an acute trauma, like an assault, accident, or natural disaster, survivors require the presence of familiar people, faces, and voices; physical contact; food; shelter and a safe place; and time to sleep.

Community
Finding a responsive community in which to tell your truth makes recovery possible.

When we play together, we feel physically attuned and experience a sense of connection and joy. Improvisation exercises also are a marvellous way to help people connect in joy and exploration.

Touch
The most natural way that we humans calm down our distress is by being touched, hugged, and rocked. This helps with excessive arousal and makes us feel intact, safe, protected, and in charge.

Taking Action
People who actively do something to deal with a disaster utilize their stress hormones for their proper purpose and therefore are at much lower risk of becoming traumatized.

Honouring the Transition from Summer to Fall 🍂

As the warm days of summer begin to fade and the crisp air of fall starts to settle in, it’s the perfect time to embrace the natural cycles around us—and within us. Just as the seasons shift, our minds and bodies need time to adjust too. Here are a few mindful practices to help you flow with the change, nourish yourself, and set purposeful intentions for the months ahead:

Set New Goals for Growth: The change in seasons is a great time to realign your focus. Set small, attainable goals—whether it’s organizing a cozy gathering with loved ones, planning a new project, or committing to a new fitness routine. Keep your energy high by giving yourself something to look forward to.

Prioritize Rest: The shorter days and cooler nights make it easier to feel sluggish. Honour your body’s need for more sleep. Set a routine that allows for deep, restorative rest. Trust that good sleep will give you the clarity and energy to move forward with intention.

Nourish with Seasonal Foods: As we transition, so do the foods we use to nourish ourselves! This fall, opt for nutrient-rich seasonal foods like squash, beets, and hearty greens. These will help fuel your body as the days get colder and darker.

Embrace the Quiet: Fall invites us to slow down. Take time to reflect and create space for rest and renewal. Whether that means cozy evenings at home or revisiting personal projects, this quieter season can help you to slow down, focus and tap into creative flow.

Keep Moving: Though it’s tempting to always cozy up and stay inside, find ways to also keep moving. Whether it’s hiking, stretching, or simply walking more, regular movement helps lift your mood and keep you grounded.

As nature shifts, remember to honour these rhythms within yourself. Embrace change, be kind to your body, and set intentions that nourish your spirit.

Jacelyn holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. With over 10 years of experience as a Registered Psychologist, she has extensive expertise working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Jacelyn is dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive therapeutic environment that empowers clients on their journey toward healing and personal growth.

Jacelyn’s practice addresses a broad spectrum of challenges, including emotional and behavioural concerns, anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment issues, attention and learning difficulties, and neurodiversity. Jacelyn offers virtual counselling, utilizing a strength-based approach and integrating techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Attachment Theory. She also offers ADHD assessments for adults.

Jacelyn offers online therapy sessions for older teens and adults, including online EMDR from the comfort of your home. She offers early morning sessions, beginning at 7:00am, a great fit for clients who prefer to start their day with a session or fit counselling into their work day/lunch break.

Attachment science explores the emotional bonds that form between humans, beginning from the individual's attachment to their caregiver during infancy. If the infant's caregiver is sensitive and responsive to their physiological and emotional needs, a secure attachment is developed between the infant and caregiver. The child learns that they can rely on and trust other people.

On the other hand, if the child perceives their needs are not being met, and the caregiver is not emotionally available, the child cannot form a secure bond.
While other factors such as genetics also contribute to determining our attachment style, the bond between an infant and their caregiver is vital in shaping their social and emotional growth, which impacts future relationships and social experiences throughout the child's lifespan.

Attachment science explores the emotional bonds that form between humans, beginning from the individual's attachment to their caregiver during infancy. If the infant's caregiver is sensitive and responsive to their physiological and emotional needs, a secure attachment is developed between the infant and caregiver. The child learns that they can rely on and trust other people.

On the other hand, if the child perceives their needs are not being met, and the caregiver is not emotionally available, the child cannot form a secure bond.
While other factors such as genetics also contribute to determining our attachment style, the bond between an infant and their caregiver is vital in shaping their social and emotional growth, which impacts future relationships and social experiences throughout the child's lifespan.

Maddy is currently taking on new teen and adult clients (ages 10+) for individual counselling at a reduced fee ($50/hr) to gain hands-on experience as part of her Master’s program. She is passionate about helping her clients through challenges regarding anxiety, ADHD, attachment issues, depression, stress management, and trauma, but is open to a wide range of presenting issues to gain further understanding and to learn more about the unique challenges her clients go through.
